Gift Establishes Scholarships and Funds for New Stadium

When student-athletes and fans come to the Bloomsburg University Upper Campus for games this fall, they will all notice something missing: the Sports Stadium name. In its place will be Steph Pettit Stadium named for Steph Pettit '89 who has made a $1,000,000 contribution for stadium improvements and athletic scholarships.

Pettit, who played football for the Huskies, founded Clean Earth Systems in 1993 and has seen the company grow into a nationwide distributor of hazardous waste containers. The company, based in Tampa, Fla., now operates 12 warehouses strategically located throughout the U.S.

"I have a passion for Bloomsburg University and I want all our coaches and student-athletes to have the opportunity to come to BU as well as compete at an outstanding venue," said Pettit. "This gift will help the coaches have the resources to recruit the very best student-athletes and when they get to campus to see that Bloomsburg has great facilities."

"I spent a lot of my time there when it was the practice football field, so that area is special to me," Pettit continued. "There aren't many people who can say they have a field named after themselves. That's pretty cool and quite an honor."

Improvements to the stadium will include new field turf, wind screens and a new scoreboard. Originally constructed in 2006, the facility has seating for more than 700 fans and is home to the Huskies field hockey, men's and women's soccer and women's lacrosse teams. In addition, local high school teams and university club teams also utilize the field.

"We are excited that Steph has made such a big commitment to this project," said Erik Evans, Vice President for University Advancement at Bloomsburg University. "He has stepped forward numerous times to help the university and for that we are grateful."

Among the other projects Pettit has lent both his time and financial resources to is the First and Goal campaign for football scholarships as well as endowing the SP-59 annual football scholarship. In 2013, he also made a gift in support of the Redman Stadium banner project.

The stadium improvements will be completed by the beginning of April.
